Why MOT history matters when buying a used car

The MOT history of a vehicle is one of the most revealing documents a buyer can review. Unlike a seller's verbal description, MOT records are independently recorded by certified garages and submitted directly to the DVSA — they can't be altered or deleted.

A vehicle with repeated advisories for the same item, or one that frequently fails on brakes and tyres, tells a very different story to its claimed "excellent condition." Equally, a sudden mileage drop between tests is a strong indicator of clocking — one of the most common forms of used car fraud in the UK.

Our free MOT check gives you instant access to this data before you invest time or money in viewing a vehicle.

How to read an MOT history report

✅

PASS

The vehicle met the minimum roadworthiness standard at the time of test. Any "advisory" items noted should still be investigated — they indicate parts approaching the failure threshold.

❌

FAIL

The vehicle had one or more "major" or "dangerous" defects. A fail is not necessarily a dealbreaker — but repeated failures on the same item (e.g. brakes, tyres, steering) suggest systematic neglect.

📏

Mileage at test

Every MOT records the odometer reading. We compare each reading against the previous test to flag suspicious drops or unusually large jumps — a common sign of clocking.

⚠️

Advisory items

Advisories are components that are worn but not yet at failure level. A car with 12 advisories across its history has consistently been driven to the MOT with marginal components — a maintenance red flag.

UK MOT rules — what every buyer should know

When is an MOT required?

All vehicles over 3 years old must have a valid MOT to be driven on UK public roads (except on the way to a pre-booked MOT test).

What's the fine for no MOT?

Up to £1,000 fine. Your vehicle will also be uninsured without a valid MOT, exposing you to much greater liability.

What do Cat S & Cat N mean?

Category S (structural damage) and Category N (non-structural damage) are write-off categories. Both are recorded on the MOT database and revealed in our Full Report.

Can a car pass MOT with advisories?

Yes — advisories are not failures. But a vehicle with many unresolved advisories from previous tests may need expensive work imminently.

Does MOT history show all owners?

The MOT record shows every test since 2005, including the mileage at each test. Keeper count history is shown on our Full Report.

How long does MOT last?

An MOT certificate is valid for 12 months. You can renew up to one month (minus a day) before the expiry date — the new certificate runs from the original expiry date.

MOT Check — Common Questions

Is the MOT check really free?

Yes. Enter any UK registration and get current MOT status and expiry date instantly, for free.

How far back does MOT history go?

Our Basic and Full reports include complete MOT history from 2005 onwards, including every test result, mileage reading and advisory note.

Can I check if a car has any MOT advisories?

Yes — our paid reports show every advisory item listed at each MOT, which can reveal recurring mechanical issues.

What if the car has never had an MOT?

New vehicles are exempt from MOT for their first 3 years. If no MOT data appears, the car may be new or the registration may be exempt.
